Weather forecasts are calling for very hot conditions in our area, which will begin over the weekend and extend through next week. Temperatures are expected to be well into the 90s throughout our region. These extreme temperatures can impact the power grid in your area, significantly increase electricity usage, and lead to higher energy bills.
Air conditioning can account for 40% - 60% of your unit’s total energy consumption during the hot summer months. To reduce your electricity usage and better manage your summer energy bills while staying safe, consider these strategies:
Raise the thermostat: It may seem counterintuitive when it’s hot outside but adjusting your thermostat by even a few degrees can reduce cooling costs. According to the Department of Energy, the energy savings per degree on the thermostat is about 1% per 8 hours of use.
Ceiling fans: Use a ceiling fan to help transmit cool air more uniformly. Ensure it rotates counterclockwise to push cool air down and remember to turn them off when not in the room (fans cool people, not rooms).
Box fans: Strategically placed, they can create a cross-ventilation effect, especially when paired with opening windows during the cooler hours.
Window coverings: Light-colored curtains and blinds to add an extra layer of insulation and block out the sun’s heat.
Minimize appliance usage: Avoid using heat-producing appliances such as ovens and dryers during the hottest parts of the day.
