Cold Weather Alert
Forecasters expect frigid temperatures over the next week, with lows near zero degrees and highs in the teens and 20s in your area. To reduce the increase in your energy bill, we are advising the following actions.
Apartments with heat pumps can cause a dramatic increase in your electric bill if not operated properly.
Watch this informative video about heat pumps to understand how it uses electricity in different modes at different temperatures to heat your apartment.
Ensure that you reduce the temperature on your thermostat to reduce the amount of time your system is in auxiliary or emergency (sometimes called e-heat) mode. This will keep you warm without spiking your electricity bill.
If you don’t have a heat pump you can still maintain a lower energy bill by reducing your thermostat to between 66-68 degrees.
You can also review your daily usage in your resident portal if your community has subscribed to this service. This will allow you to see the impacts of your decisions in reducing your energy use on a daily basis.
Even if you already expect a higher bill in the cold winter months, a cold snap such as this one without taking action to address your particular heating system can spike your usage. These freezing temperatures may cause a dramatic increase of your energy use and result in a higher bill, because your apartment may use more electricity than usual to maintain the temperature currently set on your thermostat.
